Candidate Profile

We are looking for a suitably-qualified Senior Academic Manager who not only is an excellent classroom practitioner with experience in a variety of teaching contexts, but also a competent manager with experience managing staff in a language/summer school environment.

The job holder needs the skills, technical expertise and teaching experience to ensure the effective delivery of a balanced, stimulating and inspiring programme of English lessons.

They need to be able to think quickly and to show common sense and attention to detail in a wide range of situations when dealing with staff and students. Adaptability and flexibility are critical skills, as is a cheerful, positive and can-do attitude, which is a pre-requisite of the job.

The Senior Academic Manager must have the wide-ranging skills and experience to be able to effectively line manage a team of up to 7 Academic Managers and work with over 60 EFL Teachers, who will have all joined Bede’s Summer School for different reasons and many of whom have become used to a much more relaxed and flexible approach to their teaching in their jobs abroad.

Applicants must have excellent organisational skills and be efficient, flexible and able to work in a busy, fast-paced and often challenging summer school environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work calmly, effectively and accurately even whilst under pressure and when working to tight deadlines.

The ability to build a friendly but professional rapport with staff members and lead them in a dynamic and efficient manner, set standards and norms of good practice and deal with any problems swiftly, fairly and appropriately, are all basic requirements of this post.

We aim to give students an educational, culturally-enriching and memorable summer experience in a safe and supervised setting and we are looking to employ professional staff who will accept this responsibility, and have the necessary wide-ranging skills, experience and commitment to help us achieve this goal.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in any discipline. Applicants with MA in TEFL, Education and Applied Linguistics are particularly welcomed. 
  • CELTA / Trinity College TESOL (or Accreditation-UK recognised equivalent) or PGCE (in English or MFL)
  • DELTA / Trinity College Diploma in TESOL (or Accreditation-UK recognised equivalent)
  • Applicants with QTS (Primary or Secondary) and/or CELTYL, are particularly welcomed.
  • TEFL-Q qualified according to Accreditation-UK. 

Experience

  • Extensive teaching experience (5+ years) in a wide range of contexts is essential
  • Academic Manager/DOS experience, particularly in residential Summer Schools, is essential
  • Experience of line managing staff
  • Teacher Training experience
  • Experience of preparing for and supervising external exams, particularly Cambridge, Trinity and IELTS. 

Compensation

£1,020 per week.

Statutory holiday pay is paid pro-rata with each salary payment on top of the stated weekly salary. 

Accommodation and all meals are provided. 

Working Hours

A typical working day is from 8.30am to 6pm, 6 days per week.

Shifts will include early mornings, late nights and weekends.

Senior Academic Managers are entitled to 1 full day off per week (day variable). 

Working Day

The working day is long, involves lots of contact time with Head Office, Academic Managers, Teachers and Students which can be very challenging, but it is also varied and fast-paced and of course, living and working with young people can be immensely rewarding.

Senior Academic Managers are expected to lead by example and are ambassadors of Bede’s Summer School. As such, they must contribute to upholding the good name of Bede’s and at all times, whether on duty or off duty, in uniform or not, Academic Managers must act appropriately and do nothing that may compromise or jeopardise the School’s excellent reputation in the local, national and international community.

As well as taking responsibility for the delivery of accountabilities under their direct control, all members of the Management Team are expected to make a significant contribution to the overall effectiveness and running of the Summer School. The Managers’ Office and Teachers’ Preparation Room can get exceptionally busy with many things happening at the same time; as such, the jobholder, as well as the ability to prioritise work and work accurately and effectively in a fast-paced and often quite demanding office environment require high levels of resilience.

Senior Academic Managers are residential so as to offer students a first class pastoral and welfare service; even when off duty, they must be willing to “leap into action” in case of any emergency that may arise, especially during the night.
