Located just 15 minutes from London Gatwick and amongst 50 acres of Sussex parkland, we welcome you Handcross. A small centre which offers an intimate experience for 50 students per week aged between 10 and 14. A staff ratio of 1:4 students ensures security and comfort at this well manned centre.

At Handcross we provide students with 20 hours of English tuition per week, which is made up of;

English Skills (10 hrs per week)

These lessons are based on Bede’s syllabus and are designed to improve students’ general language abilities, extend their vocabulary and pronunciation and enhance their understanding of grammar to improve their accuracy when producing spoken and written language.

Enrichment (5 hrs per week)

Using real life materials such as adverts, leaflets and television programmes, students will develop their receptive and productive English skills. Deepening their cultural knowledge of the UK, while enhancing their linguistic knowledge of the English language has proven to be a beneficial lesson.

Explorations (5 hrs per week)

These lessons, based on stimulating subjects such as science, environment, ecology, space, energy, geography, and technology use CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), methodology to enhance students’ general knowledge as well as their communication and language abilities, promoting their cultural sensitivity.

A placement test on arrival will place students into their English class. Each class will consist of students of similar age and English ability.

What is new for 2017 at Handcross?

  • Cambridge Young Learners Exam - Students can return home with an internationally recognised Cambridge certificate, illustrating their English level. (Recommended to all looking to progress through the Cambridge certification ladder, KET, PET, FCE & CAE)
  • Sailing, Trinity College - Stage & Screen and Scuba Diving Academies available at an additional cost.

What makes Handcross unique?

  • Overnight excursion on selected weeks will be included. Students after their Saturday excursion will spend the night in London. The benefits of this being they will experience the culture of London day/night and eat in an English restaurant. Accommodation, activities and meals are included.
  • CLIL methodology used in the Explorations lesson. Using stimulating subjects such as science, space and geography to develop students’ English skills.
  • Access to a Forest School for outdoor learning, Organic Garden and Mini Farm on site. Animals to look after and fruit to grow – we will be looking for help from our students to keep all our animals and fruit fed and watered.
  • A very positive review of this centre in 2016. First year running at Handcross Park and we filled to capacity on several weeks and expect many returners in 2017.

Our programme, activities and excursions are all designed for the given age range, including time every day for students to use the Wi-Fi and contact home. A great centre for those first time abroad, or wish for a challenging programme whilst having plenty of fun outside in the open grounds that Handcross has to offer.

Any questions you have with regards to Handcross and the New Horizons programme please contact us and we will be happy to help you. summer.school@bedes.org
